Cloth. Condition: Good. None (illustrator). Early Charters of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, London from Camden Third Series Volume LVIII. Edited for the Royal Historical Society by Marion Gibbs. St Paul's Cathedral, London, is a Church of England cathedral and seat of the Bishop of London. Its dedication to Paul the Apostle dates back to the original church on this site, founded in AD 604. England's first classical architect, Inigo Jones, added the cathedral's west front in the 1630s, but there was much defacing mistreatment of the building by Parliamentarian forces during the Civil War, when the old documents and charters were dispersed and destroyed. "Old St Paul's" was gutted in the Great Fire of London of 1666. While it might have been salvageable, albeit with almost complete reconstruction, a decision was taken to build a new cathedral in a modern style instead. Indeed this had been contemplated even before the fire. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight fading to spine and wear to extremities and odd slight marks to boards. Front hinge strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Generally bright and clean throughout but with institutional labels and ink stamps. Good. book.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). England's Darling is a play by Alfred Austin (1835 - 1913) an English poet who was appointed Poet Laureate in 1896 upon the death of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Fourth edition. With a preface by the author to front. On Tennyson's death in 1892 it was felt that none of the then living poets, except Algernon Charles Swinburne or William Morris, who were outside consideration on other grounds, was of sufficient distinction to succeed to the laurel crown, and for several years no new poet-laureate was nominated. In the interval the claims of one writer and another were assessed, but eventually, in 1896, Austin was appointed to the post after Morris had declined it. In a cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with slight wear to extremities and odd marks to boards and a small label to spine. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Bright but with handling marks predominantly to text block edges, institutional library ink stamps and label to front pastedown. Very Good. book.
