A4 STUDY BOOKLET RINGBOUND. Condition: As New. - (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 ? 7 May 1873), also cited as J. S. Mill, was an English philosopher, political economist, Member of Parliament (MP) and civil servant. - One of the most influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism, he contributed widely to social theory, political theory, and political economy. Dubbed "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century", he conceived of liberty as justifying the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state and social control. In his later years, whilst continuing to staunchly defend individual rights and freedoms, he became more critical of economic liberalism and his views on political economy moved towards a form of liberal socialism. Mill was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by his predecessor Jeremy Bentham. He contributed to the investigation of scientific methodology, though his knowledge of the topic was based on the writings of others, notably William Whewell, John Herschel, and Auguste Comte, and research carried out for Mill by Alexander Bain. He engaged in written debate with Whewell. - A member of the Liberal Party and author of the early feminist work The Subjection of Women, Mill was also the second Member of Parliament to call for women's suffrage after Henry Hunt in 1832. - THE REPORT: A4 Ringbound Report consists of 36 pages with a transparent front cover and a black backing card. First page of the report states: John Stuart Mill MP presented the first mass women's suffrage petition to the House of Commons on 7 June 1866. The petition was brought to Parliament by Emily Davies and Elizabeth Garrett. The story was later told that to avoid attention on arrival in Westminster Hall, they concealed it under the stall of an apple seller, which is where Mill found it. The petition organisers recorded 1499 names, which were printed and circulated in a pamphlet. However, the House of Commons Select Committee on Public Petitions counted and logged 1521 signatures. Presumably the extra 22 were last minute additions. Mill spoke on the petition on 17 July 1866. A year later, the petition led to the first debate on votes for women. On 20 May 1867 Mill tried to amend the Second Reform Bill to replace the word 'man' with 'person'. He later described this as 'perhaps the only really important public service I performed in the capacity as a Member of Parliament.' The division was lost by 73 votes to 196, but Mill was delighted by the level of support, which came from both sides of the House. It was not until 1928: Women in England, Wales and Scotland received the vote on the same terms as men (over the age of 21) as a result of the Representation of the People Act 1928. And finally. John Stuart Mill - Born: 20 May 1806, Pentonville, London - Died: 8 May 1873, Avignon, France. - The second page of the report has frequently asked questions about the suffrage petition of 1866 and answers provided by numerous specialists with links to other well informed sites. The next 34 sheets are all the names of the signatories who signed the original petition in 1866 in alphabetical order. It's a fascinating document. You may even find you have an ancestor listed here and if you do, you can find a link on page 2 to contact and enquire. - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the report enough to buy it.

A4 STUDY BOOKLET RINGBOUND. Condition: A4 Report. Dust Jacket Condition: LIMITED EDITION of Ten Reports. - (illustrator). FIRST PUBLICATION. A wonderful report all about Arthur Conan Doyle's life. - 22nd May 1859 to 7th July 1930 - The report is diverse and hugely interesting. - It begins with a chronology of Arthur Conan Doyle's life through his entire 71 years, from his birth. 1859: Born Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle, third child and elder son of ten siblings, born at 11 Picardy Place, Edinburgh, on 22 May and baptised in the Roman Catholic religion of his parents. - [this chronology consists of 7 pages] until. 1930: 7th July, Death of Arthur Conan Doyle at his home, Windlesham, in Crowborough, East Sussex. - There is a chapter about the man who inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to create the character of Sherlock Holmes. - [Joseph Bell] [1837-1911] - and why. - There is a chapter on 'The Cottingley Fairies', and Arthur Conan Doyle's involvement. - The Cottingley Fairies appear in a series of five photographs taken by Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths, two young cousins who lived in Cottingley, near Bradford in England. In 1917, when the first two photographs were taken, Elsie was 16 years old and Frances was 10. - The pictures came to the attention of writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who used them to illustrate an article on fairies he had been commissioned to write for the Christmas 1920 edition of The Strand Magazine. - Conan Doyle, as a spiritualist, was enthusiastic about the photographs, and interpreted them as clear and visible evidence of psychic phenomena. - There are transcripts of the letters that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote to Elsie Wright, and her father, Arthur Wright in 1920 and the response he received back. - In the letter that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote to Elsie Wright he said that he was just about to leave for Australia. - 1920 to 1930: Arthur Conan Doyle engaged in a world-wide crusade for spiritualism. - During 1920 and 1921, he visited Australia and New Zealand. Early in 1922, he went to America and toured the Eastern states; the following year, he travelled as far as California. - In 1928, he left for South Africa, and in the autumn of that same year, he preached Spiritualism in the Northern countries of Europe. - His promulgation of Spiritualism did not come without a price. - He expended a tremendous amount of physical and emotional energy. Furthermore, it is estimated that the decline in his literary output, because of his devotion to Spiritualism, translated into a loss of approximately £200,000, an amazing amount of money for the time. - Just six days before he died he started a drive for the modification of the Fortune Telling Act; and, on July 1, 1930, he led a petition to Council. - I have a copy of a newspaper article in which he protests against the prosecution of a clairvoyant, who was fined £20 on a charge of fortune telling. - He wrote: Sir, Is it not time that the prosecution, or rather, the persecution of clairvoyants and mediums should cease. etc. There is a short chapter on 'The Fox Sisters' of New York, in 1848 when they claimed they could communicate with a ghost. They received instant celebrity. - In 1888, one of the sisters confessed it was a deception. - One of those who would not accept her confession was none other than Arthur Conan Doyle would you believe??? - Finally, the report closes with a photocopy of Arthur Conan Doyle's hand-written will. - It consists of four hand-written pages and signed by him on the fourth page. I have then typed up the will so you can read what he has written more easily. - There is an image of his tombstone. - It is the final resting place for him and his wife who were laid side by side. - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. Signed by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. Robert Nicol Cross: Born 2nd January 1883. Died 1970. Graduated Glasgow University 1904 with MA. - This amazing book, examines the life of Socrates and his teaching, and also details the world in which he lived, the Greece of the time experiencing a breakdown of authority in religion, morality and society. - This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. - PREFACE : THE present study of Socrates and his mission has been done in the leisure gathered from other avocations, and was undertaken as the result of a profound personal reverence for Athens' saint and sage. It records the impression made on the writer by the ancient authorities. It has not been written for experts and scholars, but in order to tempt the average Englishman of culture to hold company for a little while with one of earth's most elect spirits and leaders. Accordingly discussion of disputed matters has been reduced to a minimum, though it could not be quite eliminated. The class of readers for whom the book is intended will also account for the introduction of material connected with life and ideas contemporary with Socrates, superfluous for the Greek student, but, one hopes, not uninteresting to the general reader, nor without relevance and use in giving him the needed background of light and shade in order to a just appreciation of the man's character and work. I only hope it will be the means of sending some to more authoritative and better sources, for to know Socrates is to love him and to reverence human nature. I have been helped by the various modern authorities to whom references are given, and have to thank Professors Phillimore and Latta of Glasgow University for initial guidance to the literature, and also Professor Taylor of St. Andrews for discussing one or two points with me. I am also obliged to Messrs. Macmillan & Co., and to the Clarendon Press, Oxford, for permission to quote from Dakyns' transation of Xenophon, and Jowett's translation of Plato, respectively. - R.N.C. [END OF PREFACE] - This book has a HAND-SIGNED DEDICATION TO THE FIRST BLANK ENDPAGE: 'From The Author, with every good wish, 1926'. - Condition & Description: Green cloth with blind tooling to front board. Faded gilt lettering to the spine. Fraying to spine margin at rear. Cloth faded in places to spine top and bottom. Light scuffing to corners. Browning and foxing throughout. Good quality paper. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Paul Henry (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. John Davidson (11 April 1857 to 23 March 1909) was a Scottish poet, playwright and novelist, best known for his ballads. He also did translations from French and German. In 1906 he was awarded a civil list pension of £100 per annum and George Bernard Shaw did what he could to help him financially, but poverty, ill-health, and his declining powers, exacerbated by the onset of cancer, caused profound hopelessness and clinical depression. Late in 1908, Davidson left London to reside at Penzance. On 23 March 1909, he disappeared from his house there, under circumstances which left little doubt that he had drowned himself. Among his papers was found the manuscript of a new work, Fleet Street Poems, with a letter containing the words, "This will be my last book." His body, which was discovered by some fishermen in Mount's Bay on 18 September, was, in accordance with his known wishes, buried at sea. In his will he desired that no biography should be written, none of his unpublished works published, and "no word except of my writing is ever to appear in any book of mine as long as the copyright endures." - The assumption that he took his own life is consistent with what is known of his temperament and his ideas. In The Testament of John Davidson, published the year before his death, he anticipates this fate: "None should outlive his power. . . . Who kills Himself subdues the conqueror of kings; Exempt from death is he who takes his life; My time has come." There was a small photocopy of a newspaper article inside this book. It is a reward notice for £20 for any information which would lead to the discovery of John Davidson. I'll leave this in the book for the new owner. - Davidson's poetry was a key early influence on important Modernist poets, in particular, his compatriots Hugh MacDiarmid and Wallace Stevens. T.S. Eliot was especially fond of the poem 'Thirty Bob a Week'. - CONDITION OF BOOK: This is a small book with greenish brown leather binding with gold gilt decoration to the front board and gold lettering to the spine. The front and rear boards are in a fairly good condition. There is minimal scuffing to the edges and corners. The green leather upper is very scuffed and faded on the spine although the gilt lettering to the spine is still legible. The boards are firmly bound to the inner page block. - The quality of the paper within the book is superior quality. The book is hand signed by the Author's Son in 1904 - On the full title page is the publication date, which I originally thought translated to 1905 MDCCCCV, but this is not a correct Roman Numeral. The numerals and the groups of numerals written in subtractive notation must be written from left to right, in descending order of their values, from high to low. Some symbols (letters) can be repeated up to 3 times in a row: but as you can see, there are four CCCC's, so it is effectively an error date and as the Author's son has signed the book is 1904, I want to subtract the V[5] from the final C [100] which would make the publication date as 1895. Signature reads: To my friend A. Manoukian, from Alexander Davidson - Xmas 1904. There are six beautiful illustrations by Paul Henry and all are present. The ballad consists of 38 pages and there are a further 4 pages to the rear advertising other literary works. Light browning and very occasional foxing throughout. All pages are clean and tightly bound. - E N D - Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. - Thanks for your interest and I hope you like the book enough to buy it. Hand-Signed by Author's Son -.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Maurice Sendak (illustrator). In the Night Kitchen is a popular and controversial children's picture book, written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak, and first published in 1970. The book depicts a young boy's dream journey through a surreal baker's kitchen where he assists in the creation of a cake to be ready by the morning. When the young boy [Mickey], (who looks to be about three years old) enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Critics object to Mickey's nudity which depicts not only his buttocks, but also his genitals. Some also interpret sexual innuendo in the events, with the nudity, free-flowing milky fluids, and giant (allegedly phallic) milk bottle. As a result, the book proved controversial in the United States on its release and has continued to be so. The inclusion of child nudity has been frequently raised as morally problematic; consequently, this book remains on lists of books either challenged or banned. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list compiled by the American Library Association. - Description & Condition: Dustjacket: The original dustjacket houses the book. There are quite a few closed edge tears round the extremities, and a few small chips to the top and bottom of the spine. There is a round white sticker at the bottom of the dustjacket which states: Caldecott Honor Book. There are seven titles of other Maurice Sendak books listed on the rear prelim. The dustjacket is now housed in a removable plastic archival sleeve for future protection. White linen, cloth boards with a mounted, decorative, circular illustration by Maurice Sendak, depicting Mickey with a milk bottle. The boards and illustration are in a very good and clean condition. The mustard coloured endpages [front and rear] are in a very good clean condition, as are the rest of the pages. E N D [BONUS BOOK]; WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. by MAURICE SENDAK, Published by RED FOX in 2000 - Description & Condition: Large Folio: 10 inches long by 9 inches high. [softcover] - Spine intact. Slight corner turns and few areas of creasing to extremities. Covers are clean. Unpaginated. All pages are clean and tightly bound.
