Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED & INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION. Water-stained boards on a good square copy happily without any of the foxing usually seen on this elusive title. Better than very good dust jacket is clipped (though not the price), shows only moderate creasing and just three relatively minor chips: two to spine extremities and one to lower rear panel. Book is from library of famed multi-millionaire bibliophile Edward T. (Ned) Guymon, intimate of Dannay & Lee, Hammett, Chandler, Christie, etc., (and the many whom Fred Dannay credits as being his guide & predecessor). On the front pastedown is Guymon's own weirdly fascinating bookplate. Book is a PRESENTATION COPY from Fred Dannay to Guymon's secretary Gertrude Larson, and bears this inscription penned in the bold cursive hand of Dannay: "To / Ned Guymon's / secretary -- / Gertrude Larson -- / with the best wishes / of the author / "Ellery Queen"." A highly fascinating association copy. This is also an advance copy which has the slip laid in. Signed by Author(s).

Near fine, bright copy in price-clipped dust jacket, light wear to the spine ends and corners with a small closed tear to bottom edge of the rear cover. "Ellery Queen moves into the small town of Wrightsville, somewhere in New England, in order to get some peace and quiet so that he can write a book. As a result of renting a furnished house, he becomes peripherally involved in the story of Jim Haight and Nora Wright. Nora's father is president of the Wrightsville National bank, "oldest family in town", and when the head cashier Jim Haight became engaged to his daughter Nora, he built and furnished a house for them as a wedding present. That was three years ago?the day before the wedding, Jim Haight disappeared, the wedding was called off, and the "jinxed" house became known as "Calamity House". Ellery rents it, just before the return of Jim Haight, and the wedding is soon on again. Ellery finds some evidence that Jim is planning to poison Nora and, after the wedding, she does display some symptoms of arsenic poisoning. But it is Jim's sister Rosemary who dies after drinking a poisoned cocktail. Jim is tried for the murder and it is only after some startling and tragic events that Ellery reveals the identity of the murderer." A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone title.

First edition. First edition. Signed on the title page "Ellery Queen"/ (Frederic Dannay). Fine, bright copy in price-clipped dust jacket with red color on spine lightly sunned and minor wear to the foot of spine. An important anthology as well as an early one that includes stories by Eberhart, Palmer, Rinehart, Footner, Starrett, Holmes [Boucher], Christie, Orczy, Hume, Bangs, Vickers, Wallace, et al. The introduction is quite informative. Queen says, "the first true detective in literature cracked open his eggshell in 1841, emerging 'fully grown and armed to the teeth.' Out of Poe's immortal rib [ no pun intended ] came the world's first woman detective---a full twenty years later." Queen goes on to say, "again obeying the primeval laws of nature--though less laggard, let it be noted, in matters pertaining to sin--woman came second. In all these years no one has collected in one 'feminology' the best exploits of our many distaff detectives, matronly murderesses, and petticoat pilferers." Thus does Mr. Queen explain this fascinating collection. Also contains Frederick Irving Anderson's The Jorgensen Plates, a publishing story featuring the technical aspects of publishing in England and the USA.
