Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. The ultimate collectable copy of Shantaram. SIGNED & INSCRIBED by the author, TRUE FIRST EDITION with 7 ADDITIONAL ITEMS laid-in, including original INVITATION to the BOOK LAUNCH, plus reviews & articles (full details below). SIGNED & INSCRIBED by author Gregory David Roberts in black ink on half-title page: "Linda, whose eyes race her lips to the smile and always win, and win our hearts as well. With love, Greg Roberts, August 2003". The florid inscription covers most of the page. The invitation is dated 9 August 2003, so presumably inscribed by the author at the book's launch. The FIRST AUSTRALIAN EDITION with all first edition points, as follows: facsimile handwriting to rear panel of dustjacket (the author's longhand version of the book's first paragraph); the words 'Scribe' and 'Melbourne' NOT in brackets on the rear inner dustjacket flap (the word 'Melbourne' does not appear below 'Scribe' in the reprint); close-up b&w photo of author in white shirt on rear inner dustjacket flap; copyright page states "First published in Australia and New Zealand by Scribe Publications 2003" (& no additional reprint details, nor numbers indicating print run). In the reprints the bold brackets were added to the word 'Scribe' on the rear inner dustjacket flap, plus the photograph of the author is a different shot from the first printing (the reprint shows the author face-on with a slight smile, whereas for the first edition the author has turned his head toward the camera & is not smiling). The author photograph is by Maurice Grant-Drew in both the first edition & reprints. The Australian edition preceded all others, & was first published in 2003, followed by the US & UK editions, which both appeared in 2004. This copy also includes SEVEN ADDITIONAL ITEMS laid in, as follows: *1 - INVITATION to the BOOK LAUNCH (oblong double-sided printed invitation on card stock, 10 x 21cm, recto printed with the red & blue illustration from the book's front cover, verso printed with: "Scribe Publications invites you to the launch by Peter Craven & Mark Mitchell of Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts - Shamiana Restaurant, 420 Lonsdale St., Melbourne, 8.00pm on Saturday, 9 August 2003"); *2 - Cover-story article from The Age Magazine Good Weekend, August 9, 2003, the same day as the book's launch (article by Andrew Rule which includes the front cover + 4 full-pages with colour & b&w photographs); *3 - Profile article from The Weekend Australian, August 9-10, 2003 (full-page article by Cameron Stewart with colour photograph of the author, also dated the same weekend as the book's launch); *4 - Contemporary review of the book from The Age newspaper (large half-page review by Cameron Woodhead, not dated, but presumably also August 2003, with a b&w photograph of the author); *5 - Article from Who magazine, 25 August 2003 (two-page article by Craig Henderson with colour & b&w photographs); *6 - Article from The Age online, 12/10/2004 regarding Johnny Depp to produce & star in the movie version (single page printed from the internet); *7 - Short article from Guardian Unlimited, 14/12/2004 (single page printed from the internet). Shantaram is edited by Margot Rosenbloom. Designed by Miriam Rosenbloom. Printed in Australia by Griffin Press. From front panel of dustjacket: "He was Australia's most wanted man. Now he's written Australia's most wanted novel". Author's first book. Bound in original red boards with bright silver lettering to spine, pale green endpapers, in publisher's unclipped pictorial dustjacket. The dustjacket is now protected in a removable clear Bro-dart cover. Barely a trace of shelfwear to the dustjacket, faint pencil-ghosting of former dealer's description to upper corner of half-title page, otherwise an exceptionally nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 936pp. Scarce TRUE FIRST EDITION in collectable condition, RARE UNIQUE SIGNED COPY with additional related material laid in. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author on the title page one month after publication, "September 2003, love the truth, and be true to love, David Gregory Roberts". This debut novel fictionalizes Roberts's experiences as a convicted bank robber and prison escapee who made a new life for himself in India. Roberts described himself as "a revolutionary who lost his ideals in heroin, a philosopher who lost his integrity in crime, and a poet who lost his soul in a maximum-security prison" (New York Times). He begun writing the novel during his re-imprisonment in Australia but resolved to finish it upon his release after a guard had twice destroyed his manuscript. The novel later inspired the television series of 2022. The international best-seller met with highly favourable reviews. The New York Times wrote that "nearly everything about Bombay agrees with the philosophical fugitive, for whom every new experience is an eloquent signpost into an uncertain future. He finds a father figure in a gurulike local mafia boss, an Afghan named Khader, and a lover in a mysterious Swiss woman who inspires the most memorable of the novel's many metaphoric interludes: 'My body was her chariot, and she drove it into the sun. Her body was my river, and I became the sea'" (O'Grady). Megan O'Grady, "'Shantaram': Bombay or Bust", and Gregory David Roberts, "Shantaram", both printed in New York Times on 26 Dec. 2004. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in silver, light blue endpapers. With dust jacket. Faint scratch on front cover, light bump to upper outer corner of rear board; unclipped jacket: a near-fine copy in fine jacket.
