Attractively bound in black cloth spine and gray paper-covered boards.Very clean and tight throughout. Signed "Salman Rushdie"on the title page. In a complete and striking dust jacket with the original price of $19.95. Overall, an attractive copy, signed. Laid in is 4-page pamphlet in an envelope from the Rushdie Defense Committee championing Rushdie's spirit and discussing the global impact of The Satanic Verses. The Satanic Verses is the fourth novel of the British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie. First published in September 1988, the book was inspired by the life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. As with his previous books, Rushdie used magical realism and relied on contemporary events and people to create his characters. The title refers to the Satanic Verses, a group of Quranic verses about three pagan Meccan goddesses: All t, Al-Uzza, and Man t.[1] The part of the story that deals with the satanic verses was based on accounts from the historians al-Waqidi and al-Tabari.[1]The book was a 1988 Booker Prize finalist (losing to Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda), and won the 1988 Whitbread Award for novel of the year.[2] Timothy Brennan called the work "the most ambitious novel yet published to deal with the immigrant experience in Britain".The book and its perceived blasphemy motivated Islamic extremist bombings, killings, and riots and sparked a debate about censorship and religiously motivated violence. Fearing unrest, the Rajiv Gandhi government banned the importation of the book into India.[3][4] In 1989, Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa against Rushdie, resulting in several failed assassination attempts on the author, who was granted police protection by the UK government,[5] and attacks on connected individuals, including the Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi who was stabbed to death in 1991. Assassination attempts against Rushdie continued, including an attempt on his life in August 2022. (Wikipedia) First Edition with "First American Edition" stated on the copyright page and the complete number line as well.

Set in a modern world filled with both mayhem and miracles, the story begins with a bang: the terrorist bombing of a London-bound jet in midflight. Two Indian actors of opposing sensibilities fall to earth, transformed into living symbols of what is angelic and evil. This is just the initial act in a magnificent odyssey that seamlessly merges the actual with the imagined. First British edition, early printing of Rushdie's classic novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author "to Simon and Sheila, best wishes, Salman Rushdie 22nd Nov '89." A fascinating RushdieÂassociation item. After the Fatwah againstÂRushdieÂfor the publication of TheÂSatanic Verses was issued, the writer was forced into hiding in 1990. Within two weeks Rushdie was forced into hiding with the London Metropolitan Police Special Branch protection for a decade. In the first few months of the Protection Detail, due to the high grade and imminent nature of the Intelligence threats received against him, it had been required to relocate the author and his wife once every 3-4 days. A number of safe houses, some friends, but other officially rented premises were utilized for the purpose. The person to whom this book signature is inscribed was the Metropolitan Police Special Branch Detective responsible for the Subject's Close Protection detail on occasions during the period August to November 1989. The book, signed and inscribed to Simon and his wife Sheila, was presented to Simon in a London safe house that we were occupying on Wednesday, November 22, 1989. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. One of the most controversial and acclaimed novels ever written, The Satanic Verses is Salman Rushdieâs best-known and most galvanizing book. A book whose importance is eclipsed only by its quality, The Satanic Verses is a key work of our times. "A staggering achievement, brilliantly enjoyable" (Nadine Gordimer).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition published by Viking, London in 1988. This is a very near fine copy. The jacket is completely unfaded, a very rare attribute with most copies having some sunning at the spine. This copy is the same deep blue tone across all of the jacket. There is tiny amounts of wear to the corner tips. The book is in excellent condition with only a very small handful of tiny flecks to the text block. The copyright page shows a full number line down to 1 as called for, for a first edition. The author Salman Rushdie has signed his name without dedication to the title page. Signed copies have become uncommon in recent times and are scarce in this very near fine condition.  Rushdie's award winning book that has been perceived as blasphemous by some. It has caused controversy and censorship in a handful of countries. Rushdie has been the target of attacks and attempted assassination over it. It was his fourth book where he continued to write within the realms of magic realism. A scarce book with the attributes described. . Signed by Author(s).

First edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page. The furious international controversy this novel sparked has been described as "one of the most significant events in postwar literary history" (Kureishi). Rushdie, who had long been under police protection since its publication, suffered an attack over the novel in 2022. He reflects on this in Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder (2024). The New York Times spoke highly of its literary merit soon after publication: "In its entirety, it resembles only itself, but there are, in its parts, strands and shades of resemblance: to Sterne, for one, in the joys of digression; to Swift in scathingness of political satire; to the fairy and folktales of the Brothers Grimm, to Ovid's Metamorphoses, The Arabian Nights, Thomas Mann's Transposed Heads, [and more]". Hanif Kureishi, "Looking back at Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses", The Guardian, 14 Sept. 2012; A. G. Mojtabai, "Magical Mystery Pilgrimage", The New York Times, 29 Jan. 1989. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt. With supplied dust jacket. Tiny puncture to front cover, splash mark to rear cover and bottom edge, foxing to edges, contents clean, inner hinge starting at title page; unclipped jacket, vertical crease to sunned spine, light rubbing to edges: a very good copy in like jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. RUSHDIE, Salman. The Satanic Verses (Signed) [together with] In Good Faith. London: Viking, 1988/ Granta, 1990 8vo., blue publisher's boards lettered in gilt to backstrip; together in the unclipped pictorial dustwrapper (£12.95 net); featuring an image from 'Rustam Killing the White Demon' from the Victoria and Albert Museum; black and white photograph of the author to the lower panel; pp. [xii], 3-546, [iv]; a near-fine copy, the backstrip unfaded, unlike in many copies; one small scratch to upper panel of DJ, with very minor scuffing to the edges. [together with] 'In Good Faith': publisher's green card covers, stapled; printed in black; pp. [ii], 3-22, [ii]; a few small marks to lower cover, else fine. First edition, first impression, with full number line 1-10. This copy signed by Rushdie in black biro to the title page. An infamous novel, The Satanic Verses was Rushdie's fourth book, and was based on a group of Quranic verses about three pagan Meccan goddesses; Allāt, Al-Uzza, and Manāt. As with his other works, the style relies on a combination of magical realism and real-life events, with the central plot prolifically studded with a series of sub-plots narrated as visions from dreams. In the main narrative, the two protagonists board a plane hijacked by Sikh separatists, but when the bomb is detonated over the English channel, both survive, magically transformed into the archangel Gabriel and the devil, respectively. Perhaps the most striking of the subplots is that of Ayesha, who claims to be receiving revelations from the Archangel Gabriel and leads her village on a pilgrimage to the Arabian Sea. Shortlisted for the Booker Prize, The Satanic Verses also won the Whitbread Award for novel of the year, although it was quickly overshadowed by its controversy. In 1989, Supreme Leader of Iran Ruhollah Khomeini declared a fatwa against Rushdie, and the resulting assassination attempts led to the author being granted police protection by the UK government. In 1991, Japanese translator Hitoshi Igarashi was stabbed to death as a result of his association with the work, and assassination attempts continue today, with an attempt on Rushdie's life in August 2022 leading to him losing sight in one eye, as well as the use of one hand. The pamphlet included here, issued two years after the outrage, seeks to justify and defend The Satanic Verses. "I feel as if I have been plunged, like Alice, into the world beyond the looking-glass", Rushdie writes, "where nonsense is the only available sense. And I wonder if I'll ever be able to climb back through the mirror". Signed by Author(s).

Softcover. Condition: Wie neu. Dust Jacket Condition: Neu. 1. Auflage. London: Viking, 1988. Pages browning, else a fine copy of the Uncorrected Advance Proof in a fine proof dustwrapper. Signed and titled by Rushdie on the title page. Though there seem to be no textual differences to the first trade edition, the proof of The Satanic Verses has some unique features. For instance, there are no ornamental devices separating the sub-chapters, and the "Acknowledgements" page (549) is missing completely. Also, the beginning of the "Ayesha" chapter provides for numerical sub-divisions, which is unnecessary as there are none. This copy had no title on the tile page, so Rushdie kindly supplied it in his own writing. We have never seen any copies with the printed title of the book on the title page. The proof dustwrapper varies from the one of the first UK edition in that it is matt (though we have also had one glossy one), uses a different and bolder typeface for the lettering of the author's name and the title, has a box at the bottom of the inner flap and mentions both the UK and the US publishers at the bottom of the lower flap. This item is part of our Catalogue 4: The Rushdie Collection, which you can download at ygrbooks. Signatur des Verfassers.

The British publication of Salman Rushdie's "The Satanic Verses" in 1988 sparked a global controversy and ignited debates on freedom of expression and religious sensitivities. The novel explores themes of identity and religion through a magical realist lens. Its depiction of the Prophet Muhammad led to protests, fatwas, and death threats from some Muslim leaders. The British government supported Rushdie's right to free speech, but the bookstores faced bomb threats, and its publication triggered a heated international discourse. The "Rushdie Affair" remains a significant chapter in the ongoing discussion of religious tolerance, censorship, and artistic expression.
